PESTA BONEKA is an international puppet theater festival initiated and organized by Papermoon Puppet Theatre and has been held every two years since 2008.

Papermoon Puppet Theatre itself is an independent puppet theater group that has been recognized, both domestically and internationally. As a pioneer of contemporary puppet theater in Indonesia, Papermoon Puppet Theatre holds Pesta Boneka as a forum for local and international artists to celebrate the richness of art in puppet theater.

Indonesia, especially Yogyakarta, has a long history in the world of puppetry. This makes Indonesia an international mecca in the world of puppet theater, especially in the field of shadow theater. Papermoon Puppet Theatre then thickened the position of Indonesian puppet theater art in the eyes of the world, one of which was by holding Pesta Boneka.

Papermoon Puppet Theatre has built a puppet theater network for more than 15 years, especially in the world of international puppet theater. This has proven to be a strong capital for Pesta Boneka to have an important position as the first international contemporary puppet theater festival in the Southeast Asia region.

This year, Papermoon received 96 proposals from artists in 36 countries to join PESTA BONEKA #9. PESTA BONEKA has existed with different formats among other puppet festivals around the globe, and this made the puppetry community around the globe have big interest in joining the festival. After all of the curatorial process, Pesta Boneka is grateful to host 120 Artists, 28 Groups, from 25 Countries to present their work in Kampoeng Media, Sleman, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, Indonesia as one family of PESTA BONEKA #9 “SEEDS OF HOPE”.
