Pesta Boneka is an international biennale puppet festival in Yogyakarta, which was initiated by the Papermoon Puppet Theatre back in 2008. In every performance, Pesta Boneka brings together puppeteers, audiences, as well as creative communities to experience various stories and cultures intimately and creatively. Pesta Boneka envelops its audience with a sense of warmth, displaying an awe-inspiring movement of puppets acting as living objects, telling various heart-wrenching stories, world culture, as well as local wisdom to its loyal audience.
In the last 12 years of organizing this festival, PESTA BONEKA always chooses different spaces. The last day of the festival is a day people wait for, because of all the events held in Desa Kepek, Bantul. Spectators, villagers and artists sharing and enjoying the moment in one warm place. But this time, the seventh PESTA BONEKA will be held differently.
With limitations due to the pandemic, this time Papermoon Puppet Theatre and team brought this year's festival into a virtual space. The series of events will begin on October 5th, 2020 and end on October 11th, 2020.
Creating an international puppet festival during a pandemic is certainly not an easy matter for Papermoon Puppet Theatre team.
Although the candidate artists have been selected since the end of 2019 through an open registration process, this time the composition of the performers has undergone many adjustments. The program was later adapted to the 'theatre stage' that we use today. A virtual cross country stage.
Carrying a virtual journey, it was noted that at least 30 groups / individual artists from 25 countries will be part of PESTA BONEKA #7 by staging their work virtually, which will be followed by an artist's talk that involves audience participation after the performance.
